The Honda HRC team have made a positive start to the Estoril WorldSBK weekend, completing Friday’s practices in seventh position with Xavi Vierge. A still-recovering Iker Lecuona finished eighteenth, his FP2 performance affected by a crash — fortunately without consequences. The factory team is also supported by official Honda test rider Tetsuta Nagashima, who is competing in this round as a wildcard.

This eleventh Superbike World Championship round got underway on Friday morning, with the field heading out in dry conditions for an initial practice.

It was a strong first outing for Xavi Vierge, who worked his way up the timesheets to close in sixth place. His fastest time, a 1’36.742 set in the final stages, put him just seven tenths from first. Iker Lecuona, passed fit to take part in FP1, took an understandably steady approach as he got back on his CBR1000RR-R for the first time since Balaton Park. Appearing comfortable around the Estoril track, Lecuona made gradual progress, separated from teammate Vierge by just four tenths and placing eleventh at the session’s end (1’37.103).

FP2 saw both Vierge and Lecuona focused on refining the technical setup of their bikes. Xavi built on what was already a very solid performance in FP1, demonstrating confidence in his abilities at this track. He rounded out the day in seventh place overall thanks to an impressive time of 1’36.604. Lecuona suffered a small crash mid-session that prevented him from returning to the track for the second half, though fortunately the factory rider was unhurt in the incident. Having set lap times similar to those of FP1 but not quite able to improve on them, Iker placed eighteenth in the day’s combined standings thanks to his morning’s best reference.

Nagashima also had a constructive day on track, with the Japanese rider rounding out Friday in twenty-third position in the combined standings, with a best of 1’38.414.

“So, once again, we had a very solid and positive Friday. Right from the beginning I had a good feeling here; it’s a track I like, and the bike works quite well at this circuit. We focused a lot on race pace. Of course, we also faced some challenges in FP1, but we worked hard in the right direction and improved a bit in FP2, especially in terms of pace. On the other hand, we still had a small issue with wheelies that caused us to lose some time, and that’s one area we need to work on. Besides that, as always, with new tyres we struggle to make the most of the first laps, but once they settle, the pace is quite good. We must understand how to better exploit the new tyre, because as we see, overtaking is becoming more and more difficult, so it’s crucial to qualify well. We have the pace to fight close to the top six, but without a good starting position it becomes very difficult. Anyway, as I said, overall we’re happy with the first day. We know where we need to improve tomorrow, and we’ll look at the data to see if we can find something extra.”

"First of all, I’m honestly really happy overall. This morning I didn’t expect to be this fast straight away. The best thing is that I can ride without any pain in my arm. It’s true that I feel tired and have a lot of fatigue in my arms, but I’m just happy to be back on track and working with my team. In the afternoon, unfortunately, midway through the FP2 session the front brake locked and I crashed. I wasn’t doing anything special, it just happened, and that’s why I went down. Physically I’m 100% fine, but of course it’s a bit frustrating and now we need to understand why it happened. The incident occurred between Turns 1 and 2 — I shifted into second gear and couldn’t save it. Luckily, I’m okay, as I said, so now we look ahead to tomorrow. Let’s stay positive and focus on what’s next."
