Honda HRC riders Vierge and Lecuona ready to work with their technicians to overcome the challenges of day 1 at Assen

The Honda HRC team is hard at work at the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands, as round three of the Superbike World Championship gets underway for factory riders Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge.

The first practice of the weekend took place in cool but dry conditions on Friday morning and proved more challenging than expected for Lecuona and Vierge. While Iker made gradual progress, particularly in the latter stages, Xavi had to deal with a technical issue in the garage, essentially sitting out the session while his crew worked on his CBR1000RR-R. This meant that Iker and Xavi concluded this initial phase in thirteenth (1’35.391) and twenty-second position (1’38.160) respectively, both looking for improvements in the afternoon’s FP2.

Both riders were able to make some progress during FP2, particularly Vierge who, with the earlier issue fully resolved, was soon able to find a rhythm and record a series of solid lap times. A best of 1’34.715 set in the final minutes saw the Spaniard move up the timesheets to finish fifteenth in the day’s combined standings, just over a second from the front.

Teammate Lecuona worked together with his crew to make a change to the bike’s setup but this didn’t produce the desired effect. The rider improved slightly on his earlier time, setting a 1’35.249 to complete day one in nineteenth place overall. The modification was useful in helping to define a clearer direction for tomorrow, and the team is ready to adjust the setup again in an effort to climb the standings.

“It hasn’t been an easy first day, starting with FP1 where I was only able to complete one lap due to a technical issue. But the team did a great job and in FP2 the bike was working perfectly. Of course, missing a full session had an impact – the feeling with the bike isn’t bad, but we’re still lacking a little in terms of outright performance. The data shows that overall we’re not far off, we’re just losing a bit in a few areas. So, we have a lot of hard work ahead of us tomorrow. I also tried the new Pirelli development tyre, but due to the lack of track time I couldn’t make a proper comparison with the other spec. That said, the feeling was quite good, and we were able to lap consistently. It seems to be in the same “family” as the Portimao tyre that worked well for us, so from that point of view things look fairly clear for the race.”

"I'm tackling the work here at Assen as planned, trying to be gentle on the bike, work calmly and stay focused in the garage without concentrating on the position in the standings, as we know that we need to try many things with the bike's settings. FP1 wasn't bad, although the feeling wasn't quite there yet, but we managed to get a lot of work done regardless. In the afternoon, we made some changes to the bike's geometry for the first time in a while, but unfortunately, it didn't work out. Honestly, the feeling was completely lost, and even though we tried to deal with it, we realized it wasn't the right direction. Nevertheless, it was a test we chose to carry out, so now we'll go back, analyse the data and work to come up with something different for tomorrow.”
