Team HRC is in action at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain with factory riders Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge, who have completed the first practices making up the final round of the 2024 Superbike World Championship.

Lecuona hit the ground running, setting a strong 1’40.959 on his third lap in FP1. As he gradually adapted his CBR1000RR-R to the Spanish track, he made another step forward, moving up the timesheets to finish the session fifth with a time of 1’40.241. Vierge, meanwhile, worked closely with his technicians on the setup of his bike, ultimately posting a best time of 1’40.772. Despite finishing fifteenth, he was just half a second behind his teammate in what proved to be a typically tight session at the Andalusian track.

Mid-afternoon the Team HRC duo was back out for the second practice. Focusing on race preparation rather than flying lap times, Iker and Xavi explored different settings, aiming to exploit the bike’s full potential at this track. Vierge was able to improve slightly on his FP1 time in the final stages, setting a best of 1’40.688, which, in an even closer classification than this morning, saw him place seventeenth, just over one second off provisional pole.

On the other side of the garage, some small changes made to the setup of Lecuona’s bike could not be fully exploited. As a result, his best reference remained the time he had set during the morning session, which translated into fourteenth position in the day’s combined standings, but just 0.650 seconds off the front.

Team HRC will return to the track tomorrow for the Superpole session and first of the weekend’s 20-lap races.

“We started the day positively, to be honest. Even though we had to iron out a few small details with the setup, particularly in terms of the electronics and general base setup, I felt good and consistently fast, riding mostly on my own. I was able to finish the session a promising P5, not far from the top in terms of lap times. Unfortunately, we can't say the same about FP2. We wanted to try something different with the setup to see if it would give us an extra boost, but we couldn’t find a good feeling. One of the reasons might be the fact that some tyres we had today were pre-heated. While the first set worked fairly well this morning, in the afternoon the feeling was much worse, no matter what changes we tried. We decided to revert to the morning’s settings, but again, there was no feeling. It’s a shame that we couldn’t properly test what we had planned but I’m fairly sure that, without these issues, we could have performed better. We’ll see in tomorrow morning’s FP3.”

“A demanding first day here at Jerez. As we expected, everyone is super fast. FP1 was more difficult; the feeling at the beginning wasn’t great, but we worked hard to prepare for the afternoon, and the feeling immediately improved. We were able to get up to pace on used tyres, but when we put in the new set, we couldn’t exploit them and were unable to improve further. This makes it a bit tricky to make decisions for tomorrow because while the feeling is not bad, the performance just isn’t there. But it’s happened before that when we switch to fresh, non-pre-heated tyres, the feeling improves, so now we’ll sit down, check the data carefully, and try to move in the right direction with the setup for tomorrow.”
