Team HRC on the attack at Aragón
Team HRC riders Xavi Vierge and Iker Lecuona have made a confident start to the tenth WorldSBK round at Motorland Aragón, with the two Spaniards rounding out Friday’s practices sixth and ninth respectively, only around five tenths of a second from the front and even closer in terms of race pace.
The first of the weekend’s practices ran in dry conditions on Friday morning. The Team HRC riders made a very determined start, with both Xavi Vierge and Iker Lecuona straight up into the top five in the initial stages. With Iker leading the way for a good part of this opening session, his best time – an impressive 1’49.546 – assured him of final fourth place. In the last five minutes, and having shown pace from the outset, Xavi was able to lap quicker than his team-mate, setting a 1’49.493 that projected him into third place. Having put together its best FP1 of the season so far, Team HRC set out to build on this performance during the second session.
The factory riders continued to work in the right direction during the afternoon’s FP2, another dry albeit very windy session. Lecuona once again appeared at ease around the Spanish track and was lying sixth when the session was halted with a red flag due to the tricky track conditions (too windy). Back on track a short time later, Iker made a series of interesting laps, coming within two tenths of his morning’s best but unable to quite match it.
Vierge unfortunately crashed just four minutes into the session after being hit by another rider at turn 2. Fortunately, Xavi was unhurt, but the bike sustained damage, causing the team to lose valuable time making the necessary repairs, though the subsequent red flag gave the technicians a few extra minutes. Vierge attempted to return to the track with fifteen minutes left on the clock but had to pit again after one lap to make further minor adjustments to the bike. Finally able to rejoin the action with six minutes to go, the Spaniard was able to make one lap in the high ’49s, but this was deleted due to the yellow flag.
With both Xavi and Iker having set their best times during the morning’s session, those results ensured that the duo placed sixth and ninth in Friday’s combined standings.

“FP1 was really good, and I immediately had fantastic feeling on the bike. We had strong pace and completed a solid fast lap. Unfortunately, in FP2 I could only complete a handful of laps and couldn’t fight for the top positions because on my second lap, Öttl ran slightly off line while I was passing him, which meant he hit me and caused me to have a big crash at turn 2. It was a dangerous one because it’s unusual to crash on the inside of a corner, but luckily I was unhurt, even though I hit the wall. The bike was quite damaged though. The team did an incredible job to repair it before the end of the session, so I was able to go out with a few minutes to go, basically to check that everything was okay and working properly. I even managed to make a decent lap in the high 1'49s, but it was canceled due to the yellow flag. As for the track conditions, the grip is amazing on the line, but the asphalt is a bit dirty just off the line, and the wind is really strong, especially in the afternoon. So, we end this first day in Aragon by taking the positives: the feeling is there, the speed is there, and I walked away unhurt from a big crash, so I’m totally looking forward to tomorrow.”

“Today I’m quite happy because this morning we found a way to improve my feeling on the bike with every exit, working in different areas. In the afternoon, the wind was very, very strong, which was not easy to manage. We adjusted the setup to try and address this, but we made the change with a less-than-ideal combination of front and rear tyres. Once I pitted and changed the tyres, putting in a used front, I was immediately able to almost match my FP1 time. I was able to maintain good pace on my own, even on my last lap, when I set a 1’49.6. We are strong in sectors one and three, but we’re struggling in the last sector in terms of acceleration along the back straight. So, let’s say that we haven’t put everything together yet, but even so, we’ve improved the setup, I enjoyed riding the bike, and I feel there’s room to manage it. For now, we’ve done a really good job, so let’s see how things go tomorrow.”
